Mamanuca Islands Guide

The Mamanuca Islands are clearly visible off the coast of Nadi International Airport. The stunning beauty and close proximity of the island group with its handsome scattering of tiny coral atolls and small volcanic islands all within view of each other make this the most popular holiday resort destination, a fantastic sailing destination and the busiest day cruise destination. Although not overly commercial (the largest resort has only 150 rooms), these islands are beautiful rather than enchanting. Yours will not be the only footprints in the sand and the friendly Fijian hosts are all perfectly trained in tourist hospitality. Ironically, it was on one of these islands (Modriki) that the film Castaway starring Tom Hanks was filmed, adding to the frenzied attractions of the day cruise itineraries.

The beach locations throughout the islands are so beautiful that they attract families, romantic honeymooners and backpackers alike. The islands offer an array of commercial water activities from kayaking and water skiing to parasailing and windsurfing. The selection of resorts is good, with most price categories catered for although certainly at a premium to those on the mainland. There are numerous day cruises available which depart from Nadi and pick up at the resorts along the way. Some resort islands (Mana, Castaway, Malolo and Plantation) are themselves destinations for day trippers from Nadi and can be overwhelming for those staying on the islands but a treat for those from the mainland. Other day trip destinations include tiny coral atolls like Tivua or South Sea Island or sailing aboard old schooners to the now famous lagoons around Modriki.
