The main destinations are Savusavu Bay on the island of Vanua Levu and Taveuni Island which lies 30km to the east. The world famous Rainbow Reef extends off the south coast of Savusavu to the southern point of Taveuni and most of the resorts are geared to scuba diving. Apart from the exceptional scuba diving the area has some of the most dramatic mountain scenery around the islands with National Parks and Nature Reserves. The unique Tagimaucia flower can be found in the hills of the mountains and waterfalls abound fed by the tropical rainfalls that make these islands lush and verdant. Birdlife is fantastic with a variety of sea and land birds and several islands support large nesting colonies like Namena Island off the south coast of Vanua Levu. Savusavu Bay has a great harbour and is popular with visiting yachties and several charter boats are available for day and longer cruises. There's a small town at Savusavu but there are few independent restaurants and the small resorts are all quite remote and self-contained offering their own tour activities and dive excursions. There are several lovely tropical beach locations around Savusavu as well as the stunning Natewa Bay, although much of the coast is rocky or covered with mangrove forests. Most of the small resorts usually pick the best locations. Taveuni has more of a holiday atmosphere with several independent restaurants, boutique shops, cafes and tour operators with a small concentration of resorts and backpacker accommodation at the northern end of the island. The waterfall at Bouma is one of the most attractive in the country and has great walking trails through the rainforest and along the attractive coastline.
