Beaches are few, except along the Southern "Coral Coast" where tropical forests converge with white sand beaches backed by coco palms and resorts. Elsewhere, the coasts are covered by the tough sea-trees of the mangrove forests and these are mostly impenetrable acting as a valuable nursery for baby fish and small sea life. So most of Viti Levu's beauty is inland, with large views of nature; and the untamed strength of many mountains bears witness to the country's fiery and volcanic origin. Trees and forest are everywhere, roads few, half the country being wooded - watered also, since one is never far from the great rivers or their tributaries tumbling over rocks and frequent waterfalls to join them. The island is very fertile and growth is everywhere, urged by constant tropical sunshine and frequent rain. Many of the trees bear flowers and they colour unforgettably the mind's picture of Fiji; striking too are the giant and vastly spreading banyan trees. Between the West and the East there is a dramatic difference - in countryside and climate. The West, with its International Airport at Nadi, is open and has flat agricultural land which supports Fiji's sugar-canes, its hills are low and rounded, and the land turns brown after the rainy season passes in April. Nadi has a small beach area although its unattractive location has impressed few hotels which prefer to market their rooms as a convenient base along the inland road rather than destinations in their own right. This is true, for in all directions there is beauty, particularly the offshore islands to the west and the mountains to the east for which tour companies offer many options. The Coral Coast around the south-east of Viti Levu is the main tourist destination with nice beaches and large resorts. The garden valley of Sigatoka along the South Coast marks the beginning of the East with its jagged mountains which raise the clouds, bring rain and make green the land round Suva, the capital, on the south east side of the island. Suva is a seaside town without beach but has good shopping, some nice colonial style architecture and an excellent museum.
