Nadi Airport
Viti Levu Fiji Islands ![]() Large Picture Great base for shopping, mountains and traditional villages ... Click an icon in the Map of Nadi Airport for more pictures Nadi Town has good restaurants and shopping but being a tourist centre, is full of touts trying to sell you something. Bargain hard in the shops and don't be led. The Nadi Hindu Temple is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and often features spectacular festivals and ceremonies. The Queens Highway runs inland through the Nadi suburb of Martintar where several hotels are located. There are bars, nightclubs and restaurant here but not much else. New Town beach at Nadi Bay has half a dozen small backpacker resorts alongside a rather dirty beach but with lovely sea and mountain views. There has been a recent problem of crime against tourists in this area. The beach at Wailoaloa is not especially clean and the lagoon is muddy and too shallow for swimming. It is backed by sugar cane fields and still to be developed as a tourism spot. However, there is one small resort at the end of the road which fulfils the South Seas dream of sand and sea. Never-the-less, it is all that Nadi has to offer by the sea. Fantasy Island at the far end of Wailoaloa beach backing the mangrove estuary of the Nadi River is an assortment of residential homes and small resorts along inland waterways. Denarau Island is a reclaimed mangrove island connected to Nadi by land bridge. The flat island offers seven large resorts, golf course and high security residential homes with lovely mountain views. Denarau Island has several large international style resorts alongside rather ordinary beaches. The best of these is the unusual black sand in front of the Westin Resort. Unfortunately the sea here is rather murky and not good for snorkelling. Denarau Island Golf Course is of championship standard and has great mountain and sea views The dark sand beach at low tide in front of Sheraton Fiji Resort is picturesque but swimming here is not ideal. Sonaisali Island Resort is located on a small island within the mangroves a 2-minute ride across the channel from the main island of Viti Levu, about 15-minutes drive south of Nadi Town. The beach at First Landing Resort, about 15km north of Nadi Airport, sits beside the Vuda Marina in a picturesque beach setting but offers no swimming or snorkelling as the sea here is tidal. Never-the-less, this is a gorgeous spot with splendid ocean views. Local villagers use the Sabeto River for their daily washing. Further upstream are hot bubbling pools. The picturesque beach at Saweni about 20km north of Nadi is popular with locals as a day time picnic spot and night time drinking venue which is best avoided. Sugar cane farms and grassy hills around Momi Bay. Nadi is on the dry western side of Viti Levu. |
