Fiji Islands Work Permits

If you are thinking about investing in Fiji, or starting your own business in Fiji, make sure you research thoroughly. The short answer is that obtaining a work permit and setting up a business can be very frustrating and time consuming. Government departments are thoroughlly inefficient as well as corrupt and work permits can take over a year just to process.. Getting someone to make a decision, or even call back to your telephone messages is virtually impossible. Help is at hand tyhrough the FTIB which aims to streamline the process for foreign investors.

To set up a new business, the company name must first be registered with Business Registration, a process that is meant to take 2-3 weeks but can easily end up taking 4-6 months. Without Business Registration, you will be unable to apply for VAT or open a business bank account.

Land issues are particularly sensitive so any business requiring land such as a tourist resort or factory will have to obtain permission through the Native Lease Trust Board, a process that can sometimes take over a year.

Basically, nothing in Fiji is simple and no-one is efficient. Have enormous reserves of patience if you ever want to invest or set up business in Fiji. You're best approach is to go through the Fiji Trade and Investment Board (FTIB) which is set up to help investors overcome these bureaucratic annoyances.

For those seeking a work permit, a worthy presentation must be submitted to the Fiji Trade and Investment Bureau proving the profession being offered cannot be supplied by a Fiji Citizen and that the business will benefit Fiji and its Constitution.
.

Company Tax is 33% and VAT is 12.5% with an additional 5% incurred on the hotel industry. Many forms of incentive concessions are available depending on the business or trade. Export services, for example, enjoy current tax free status for 1 year and generous allowances thereafter.
