Fiji Islands Activities

Fiji is a fun and exciting destination to explore. Nadi International Airport on the west coast of Viti Levu is the centre for travel arrangements. All local transfers to the outer islands depart from Nadi. All airlines and car hire companies have outlets at the arrival concourse at Nadi Airport. There's also a Fiji Visitor Bureau outlet where you can pick up brochures and find out information about most of the tours and accommodation options but don't expect much else - the staff are often short on detailed information. The Visitor Bureau cannot book tours or accommodation for you although there are lots of telephones at the airport to book direct as well as a number of large and small tour companies based at the concourse who are generally more helpful and will book both tours and accommodation for you. But be warned, each tour operator has only a selection of tours and accommodation and will therefore sell only these products.

Nadi Town also has several tour operators along the high street and most resorts have their own tour desks to help you make travel arrangements and organize day tours.

There are a great many tour and sightseeing options in Fiji. Viti Levu, the main island, has the most varied attractions with Nadi on the west coast and Pacific Harbour on the south coast being the two main centres of tour activity. Sightseeing tours from Nadi focus mostly on island hopping around the offshore islands. Most day tours depart at 9am and return at 5pm but there are several half day tours returning at 3pm. Costs start at F$80 for the day which includes lunch. Other attractions around Nadi include aerial sight-seeing (helicopter and sea-plane tours), the orchids of the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and 4-wheel drive inland safaris through rural countryside and up into the Nausori Highlands for vistas and village visits. Denarau Golf Club, a 10-minute drive from Nadi Town, is open to the public and a round of golf with compulsory golf cart costs F$120.

The eco-tourism centre on Viti Levu is at Pacific Harbour along the south coast. Here the rainforest is vibrant and the rivers meander into the remote interior with traditional villages on its banks. River tours are available which take in this stunning scenery with an introduction to a local village. In the rainy season from December to April, white water rafting is also available. Other year round tours visit waterfalls on inland hikes. The coast of Pacific Harbour has excellent scuba diving, surfing and game fishing and all are supported by charter boats. Several sailing charters are also available from Pacific Harbour and Suva.

Several family orientated tours are based around the resort centre of the Coral Coast, also on Viti Levu's south coast. These include a ride on a restored sugar train to the sweeping remote beach at Natadola where swimming is excellent, Kula Nature Park and the Korolevu Cultural Centre with its replica traditional villages.

Scuba diving locations are numerous and most resorts around the islands have their own PADI instructors and dive boats. The Rainbow Reef in the Northern Islands and Astrolabe Reef in the Southern Islands are the two main centres for experienced divers with fantastic soft corals, bommies, drift dives and drop-off's. Several resorts in these areas cater exclusively for scuba diving fanatics. Scuba diving elsewhere is equally as good with the Western Islands rich in marine life and its warm shallow waters ideal for beginners. Fiji has its own decompression centre and there are several luxury live aboard dive charter boats to experience some of the more remote regions.

More About Fiji Diving

Most surfing breaks in the Fiji Islands are reef breaks and are for experienced surfers only. Breaks are both left and right handers with reliable barrels. The Mamanucas and Southern Islands have the most challenging breaks in the islands both with several surf resorts just off the breaks. There are also several resorts around the main island of Viti Levu which shuttle surfers to the breaks. Beach breaks in Fiji are found only off the South Coast of Viti Levu around Sigatoka and these are good for beginners although the undercurrents here can be dangerous.
