Fiji Travel Guide

Bula! (Greetings),

Fiji travel has a great many advantages to tempt tourists to its shores : emerald isles, pellucid seas, year-round sunshine and lush verdant rain forests. It is easy to get to Fiji, being on the main air routes between Australia and North America, and the people are genuinely friendly and welcoming. All kinds of Fiji vacations are possible from the most luxurious and lazy to strenuous walking and climbing. Also available are scuba diving, sailing and surfing, game-fishing and white water rafting in places hardly visited by man:

There are at least 300 Fiji Islands of reasonable size. The classic South Sea Island shore predominates - a long curve of bright white sand fringed by palms and lapped by shallow pellucid seas. But beaches of black sand exist, rocky beaches too, even cliffs, though of no great height. There are dunes as well which shift with the forces of nature to reveal things long buried by time.

Fiji is defined by the area between the latitudes 15 and 22 South, and the longitude 177 West and 174 East. This area covers a little over 700,000 sq. km of which all but 3% are sea. About a hundred of the islands it holds are inhabited, the main island of Viti Levu and the second largest island of Vanua Levu in the North accounting for over 75% of the land area. Viti Levu has the capital, Suva, and International Airport town of Nadi and has 70% of the population. Apart from Taveuni in the North and Kadavu in the South, the rest of Fiji's islands are very small, some just tiny coral atolls, and spread out amongst 3 main island groups - Lomaiviti and Lau in the East, the most eastern of which are closer to Tonga than Viti Levu, and the Yasawas (including Mamanuca) in the West. The northern island of Rotuma is seldom visited and is home to an indigenous Polynesian community, as opposed to the Melanesian Fijians.
